Ex maintenance electrician (made redundant) with little installation experience but with 17th edition and 2391, and unlikely to do much work anyhow due to dodgy knees but interested to know what certification/notification/etc is required in Scotland for smaller jobs like say : extra sockets, shed supply, etc I would expect it,s more bother than it,s worth but would like to hear your views !
Have enjoyed this forum for about a year !

Hi, all work requires the usual EIC, MEIWC. Work which forms part of construction subject to building warrant will require you to be a member of SELECT or NICEIC to sign it off to the satisfaction of Building Control, or you/your customer will have to advise the local Council (in advance of work starting) that you want them to certify the electrical work. Having the Council certify work will be expensive other than for the very occassional work.

Be aware too that a rewire in a flat requires building warrant too. You will read a lot about Part P on this site, but it does not apply in Scotland.

Regards.

There is another option polo, one which i use as im not nic or select. The SBSA state that certification can be done "by enquiry" meaning providing the building control officer is satisfied with your quals ect they will accept your certs. This is what i do here in the Highlands. The first 2 or 3 EIC's that i sent to BC were accompanied by copies of my quals, calibration cert and PLI. I know just send the EIC/MWC along with cal cert. Here is the document.http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Resource/Doc/217736/0092252.pdf

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Could I ask you to simplify it even more (sorry!)
If I was installing a new circuit, say for example a cooker point, I would need to furnish an Electrical Installation Certificate/Schedule of Inspections/Schedule of Test Results and need a calibrated MFT and Indemnity insurance to fully comply with requirements. ?

Hi, yes to the EIC/Inspection/Tests. You could "avoid" calibration by having a recorded checking regime for the various tests of your MFT (but if you went down the "by enquiry" route, the Council may insist on calibration certs). Insurance - you probably want PL rather that PI unless you plan to do EICRs in which case both should be in place.

Regards.
