Certification Query

I have completed a Shower install with the plumber.

The flat already had a supply from Consumer Unit to 45A Pullcord switch, so I have extended from the switch to Shower.

My question is what certification to issue, MWC or EIC. I'm more inclined to issue MWC.

I'm in Scotland, so no need for notification to BC.

Your inclination is correct - a MWC is the one to use as all you have done is alter an existing circuit.

Minor New Works Certificate is all that is required Andy.

It's already on a separate RCBO.

I know mate, it was just a query on the actual certificate to fill in.

As an aside, if I had replaced the RCBO then it would have been an EIC as the fundamentals of the circuit had been changed. That is correct isn't it?

No, not as far as I'm concerned.
Just about any alteration to a circuit will affect the characteristics or fundamentals of the circuit.
MWEICs are intended for alterations to a single circuit, EICs for new circuits, or alterations which affect more than one circuit, such as CU changes.

Not if you replaced it - but if you changed it for another protective device then you would need to fill out an EIC instead of a MEIWC.

Even then I wouldn't use an EIC, as it is still only an alteration.

Notes on MEIWC, ......but not for the replacement of distribution boards or similar items (page 418 YB). Why does a CU change require an EIC, using same supply & bonding. Its just replacing a box!

Oh how I yearn for the simple days of my childhood when a consumer unit was a box with two fuses in it and one of them was neutral that Dad replaced with a nail and the washing machine had a gas burner underneath and a cranking handle on the top to turn back & forth to slosh the washing about in the suds.

The Bin Men (Refuse Disposal Operatives) would arrive on Wednesday every week & carry the metal bin full of ash & other miscellaneous crap on their shouders with never a complaint about the "wrong sort" of rubbish being in it, empty it into the truck and then bring the empty bin back!!!

The Coal Man (Solid Fuel Delivery Person) would carry sacks of coal on his back along the path to the back yard and then run like hell chased by a snarling snapping dog (that wasn't even our dog but just appeared in the back garden one day & decided to claim it as his territory) back out to the street.

Central heating - what's that all about???? An open fire in the living room what we had and was supposed to heat water in a tank for washing & bathing but never did so the gas washing machine was used to boil water which was then bailed out into a bucket & carried to the bathroom.

We lived, survived and even thrived. Nowadays it seems we aren't even allowed to fart without having some sort of qualification or certificate signed by some third party interfering busybody and a simple matter of changing a fuse involves a shower of sparks descending into thermal meltdown over what piece of paper needs to be scribbled on!! :wink_smile:

Those were the days.
We still had the pipes for gas lights in my Ma & Pa's house. Dad would use the coal bunker as an outside toilet, Mum had a new fangled upright washing machine, with a spin dryer - yeah! Gas water heater in the inside bathroom and when I was learning the trade, we were never given 'test machines', apart from bell & battery. Anyhows.
