Over the past year I have converted a garage into a grooming room for my girlfriend, before I start I would like to point out that although I'm not a certified electrician I have lots of practical experience in similar trades, mainly, theatre, film and photography. I have renovated a few house and completed many small diy LX job. When ever I do any work that requires a certificate after I have completed the work I then get it checked and certified.

When I completed the garage conversion I got a local electrician in to certify the work. He remarked that that the job would need to update the main fuse box as it was out of date, granted the box was installed in the 60s. So we had it updated by him. I then had to return home to my own home in the South of England some 200 miles away from the job. The electrician, passed the inspection and said he would put the certificates in the post. Well after many weeks nothing arrived . I contacted him and he said he had sent them. Well nothing arrioved so I said just send a copy of the certs, I've been waiting since last summer for this, now after a recent txt message he says he has to actually re test the house.

My question is why has it taken so long for him to get of his --- and why can't he just send a copy, I presume he made a copy for his own records.
What should I do? Who is the governing body that he would answer to.

How on earth should we know why it has taken him so long? But yes he should have retained a copy and sent the originals to you.

There isn't really any governing body in the industry. There are a few schemes where electricians can register but they are only money making enterprises and don't really bother about customer complaints.

I'm just frustrated. However I'm sure it doesn't take six months to respond. Who produces the certificates? Can they be bought anywhere?

Yep, but he says he going to come this week and retest the house, so I'm going up to be there when and if he does turn up. But you can be your bottom dollar, I'm not paying for it again.
