Hi all,

New to this forum and new to the world of electricians. I am just after a bit of advise really regarding training etc. I am currently working for a large telecommunications firm and am looking to retrain.

I was considering one of these home learning/day centre courses and have read/heard numerous bad reports from clearly experienced people on here saying that the only way to become a qualified spark is through full time college or apprenticeship and lots of experience. These choices are not really an option for me as I am in full time employment, mortgage etc etc (you know the deal).

So, getting to the point..... I do have experience (all be it in telecoms) regarding testing, wiring, terminations, health and safety etc, etc.

So does any one have any advise, experience as to whether a course of this type would be suitable or any other avenue to persue.

Oh yeh, and the course I was offer was £5850 (city and guilds level 2 & 3 2330 and nvq level 3)
Many thanks all !!

Not experienced by any means but will be starting college on Saturdays in September like you full time job mortgage bills etc. I looked at one these home study courses again nearly £6,000 get qualified in a few weeks etc etc.

To me they looked a complete joke all home study with about 10 visits to a centre throughout the course.

The college course I have just signed up for is 2 years 2330 L2 & L3 £600 per year much better deal in my opinion.

Again I no nothing so take take this as the right way forward.

Hold your horses before signing away a mamoth amount of cash. Most colleges do a 3 year 2330 course for about 600 quid a year approx. That'll get you part 2 and part 3 of the 2330 course which is a recognised C&G qual. The NVQ L3 has mixed acceptance. Depends on where and who you wish to work for. Not all want it or care about it. Check this out before doing the course - costly. I walked into a small firm with my 2360 qual ( predecessor to 2330 ) and nothing else. No experience. Worked in an office before, and did the saturday course prior to resigning my job. Almost 3 years in, and it has worked out well. Experience counted for everything - adding to the minimal stuff you learn at college. I don't look back now. Money is tight ( especially having bought tools ) but I still am glad at the move I made.
