Hi all need some advice!

Im a qualified electrician but not registered part p.

Im going to be carrying out some work soon for a relative as they are getting an extension built. Work consists of adding a few extra sockets and a lighting point and i know this isnt notifiable but i will need to RCD the downstairs lights as the cable will be hidden within the wall.
My idea was to buy an RCBO and job done but i was thinking, would this then make the job notifiable with changing the type of protective device??

Also bonding is being updated to 10mm as its 6mm at the moment and its TNC-S. I cant get to the stop cocks so would it be ok just to pick up the gas and water at the boiler upstairs??

Cheers

Im not installing new circuits, just extending them but they are not being extended into a special location. I just wanted to know if changing the 6A MCB on the lights for a 6A RCBO would make the job notifiable.

Also cant get to the origin for the gas and water and i thought the regs stated something along the lines of 'as close as practicable'. Just wanted to confirm this.

"Where practicable, the connection to the gas/water/oil services should be within 600mm of the service meter, or at the point of entry to the building".

How were the original bonding connections made?

From what you describe, everything excluding the bonding will be notifiable, maybe give your local building control chaps a call.

Cant find where the connections are for the bonding, must be under the floorboards somewhere, thats why i thought i may aswell take them to the boiler so they can be seen for inspection at later dates.

I no i think ill have to. Takes the pee how i can carry out and sign off jobs 37hrs a week but not outside these hours!!!

I was told that changing MCB's to RCBO's is notifiable as you are changing the protective device of a circuit (just like you are when swapping a board). I also thought upgrading the bonding was notifiable too, as this is always listed when I'm siging jobs off on the Elecsa website.

I'm sitting here with the list of non-notifiable works and bonding is one of them, however upgrading the earthing conductor is notifiable.

Looks like its earthed metallic conduit for the switch drop for the light then!!

Question now is how would you earth the conduit in the wall? Would the easiest method be just to run an earth from the CU and earth clamp it to the top of the conduit when it comes through the ceiling? What size cable would you use for this?

Maybe this is why:- :)

There is a reason behind 'Part P' registration and assessments.:D

Hi
is a RCBO a MCB with a rcd fitted?

isnt the trip characteristics of a typeB 6amp MCB the same as the trip characteristics of a typeB 6amp RCBO ? so really the device to protect the cable hasnt changed, so is this notifiable?

There is a reason behind 'Part P' registration and assessments.:D

It provides a traceable record of work for the tax man and an income stream for a lot of hangers on. IMO part P has not made electrical installations any safer than proper training would

The comments made by the OP are indicative of the lack of knowledge from the poor training in the industry that is available to new sparks entering the trade. Without the internet and forums like this one a lot of the posters would be high and dry and the quality of installations would suffer

Maybe so, UNG,

But regardless of experience or knowledge, the answer to all the OPs questions are either in 'The Regs (or Guidance Notes)' or 'Approved Document P' - both of which he should have a copy of if he's going to do work on domestics - and he would have a copy of each of these if he was a member of one of the schemes.:)

So, he can't come on here moaning that he can't sign work off, if he hasn't made any kind of effort to know the requirements anyway.:)
