I have been asked to do a job in a car wash/ accident repair shop. /they have just bought 2 pieces of 2nd hand equipment, An industrial extractor fan (9A) and a roller shutter door (2A). The motors are 3 phase, but the supply is single phase. I have not had any experience with changing motors over, only wiring them when they have already been installed. Is it just a case of simply changing the motor over, or is there a lot more to it than that?

I had considered a phase inverter, but as this side of things is fairly new to me, I was wondering how this would compare in terms of cost, reliabilty etc. Though I do like the how easy it sounds compared to changing motors over... I can seethe job turning into a bit of a nightmare by having to order two new motors and changing them over without the experience.

First have a check as these are relatively small motors you may find that they can be adapted for either 3 phase or single phase supplies.

If they can't then I would contact the makers and explain your situation, they may do conversion motors and kits for their equipment which would make any modification easy and still be in line with the standards for these units, especially PUWER.

If that fails then any modifications you do will have to ensure that the equipment stills comes in line to the EAWR and PUWER and this could be a real nightmare for you.
