I am changing an old light switch to a new one but there are so many connections in the old one I don't know what to do. It's a really small job and any advice would be welcomd

Steve the only advice I can offer is, leave it alone and get an Electrician to do it for you.

As what @westward10 has said. show us a pic of the switch with the existing wiring in and also a pic of the back of the new switch and we might be able to help.
Make sure you safely isolate the circuit before taking the pic.

Yes one wire nut will grab a wire but I will suggest an orange one because the wire is 14 gage wire for lighting.

I was pretty sure the centre was COM but had the blue in whereas most people would use the red.

That does help, it shows that the problem is almost certainly in the way it is connected and not a problem with the fittings.
