Hi

I have several cables running vertically and I have chased out a vertical chase.

Was wondering what you guys recommend or prefer doing when it comes to chasing/capping etc?

Have read through some comments on net saying some people don't place capping over cables if wall has been chased (personally I think its better looking with the capping on even if it has already been chased.

Also I have about 4/5 cables running side to side ie. grouped together so putting capping over this group of cables might be tight and did read somewhere that someone used dabs of bonding plaster - then led cables on top of bonding plaster - then put capping over the cables and of course on top of the dabs of bonding plaster?

Anyone else used or have a similar way to enable capping to stay over a group of cables??

Chris

I would always use capping. 1. it keeps the plaster away from the cable 2. It will ease future cable pulls if required.

Remember, if you have to run cables grouped then you will have to add this factor in to your cable calcs ;)

:thumbsup

What is your preferred method of fixing the capping to the walls if you just cant get it to stay with capping nails etc?

I've seen people get into right states with capping nails. If they're not playing the game then I have gone as far as drilling, plugging and screwing into position.

I have seen people just throw bonding over the top. This works but you just know what's going to happen on a future cable pull ;)

What size plugs do you use and is there a recommended brand to get when using wall plugs. Guessing with screws they dont have to be too long either???

I just use standard size red plugs. Screws don't need to be massive.

Please be careful when using this method, I have seen one doughnut screw through the cable doing this. I wasn't even working on the electrical installation whilst this work was being done but I was having a little snigger when they were having to Divide and Conquer (IR test) to find the problem. To say the boss was not impressed was an understatement lol

Red plugs, Fischer, well worth buying decent plugs nylon ones are great. To save on screws drill and plug and use clout nails, or if the Walls soft enough just use clout nails

or if the Walls soft enough just use clout nails

I've used them also and still keep them in my fixings box. I always try the capping nails first though, sometimes they go in without issue but sometimes... well they just get thrown around, stamped on and sworn at lol In an empty property when the client is not around of course :)

where the mortar is soft/crumbling etc I drill a 6mm hole in brick, insert 6mm wooden dowel (packs of 100 from screwflix) and then nail through capping into dowel, just put a marker on drill depth for same length as dowel......... Jobs a good un :)

yep oval conduit all the way - half the time the walls in propertys are the light weight grey blocks - with a impact driver a decent wood screw usually drives straight in the blocks - great to hold the oval while its getting plastered over :)

One of my pet hates is uncapped cables i just think its being lazy it might be me but it looks a lot more professional job using capping and if you get any problems later on you have got half a chance pulling a new cable in.
