I am thinking of replacing my old gouge chisel with an armeg 30mm square chisel, am sick of the gouge just digging an ever deeper chase (or should that be gouge).
With the gouge I dont drill a line of pilot holes or anything and it is easy to start at any point. bit of a messy 'chase' though.
Also I dont like the 'cutter' type chasers due to dust (most of my work is domestic).

What are these like?

How easy is it to keep the depth constant?

How easy is it to start?

thanks

My wall chaser has a hoover attatchment and I dont find it too dusty, bit of care needed!

However what a disaster if the hoover falls off mid chase......really not funny!!!!!

used to use a similer type one, it just hammers the granny out of the brickwork.
Depth was fairly easy to gauge after a couple of boxes.
seemed to struggle in some brickwork, better suited to thermalites

Gota ask have you experience of scutch masonry chisles ? If you havent, I will elaborate. I dont posses any normal masonry chisels etc now because scutch are so brilliant.

and in any case, if i got to use a normal chisel, its got a thing attached to the end of it called big bertha SDS and jason.

Ok, they are basically a cold chisell but the end is a metal comb with abouteight teeth in it, its reversible. channelling is removing masonry. I think the best advice is to say get yourself one, about ÂŁ6-10, useit then make your decision. I will say this, if you dont get on with it, send it me and I will pay you for it !!- very very usefull for all the nibbly little bits we have to do as well. Bit like trunking cutters, once you got one youwil never use a hacksaw again.

scutch chisels are great in houses with old crumbly mortar. You can nibble away at the brick work with less chance of knocking a whole brick out because you don't have to beat the living daylights out of them. Also good in tight corners where you haven't got much room to swing your hammer
