Which came first?

After training I don't own a car or tools suitable for electrical work. People around me say I should wait till I get an electrical job before buying either. I am not so keen on their advice because to me it would not look very good to a potential employer to not have any transport or tools. To me it gives the impression that I'm not serious about it.

What would you do?

Buy some tools and a car first or wait till you find a job?

i would buy the basics in tools. say a set of screw drivers snips and pliers. your own hammer and a good volt meter. the rest can follow when you are earning, if i was taking someone on thats the minimum i would expect him or her to have. as for the car well it depends on how far you will have to travel for work i would not expect anyone to have their own transport for work but you may have to travel a bit to work if you are not lucky enough to be picked up.

Put yourself in an employers position, you go for the interveiw, all goes well , can you start day after tommorow he asks , No mate you reply Ive got to spend a couple days sorting out some tools-

Like phil7677 said, get the basics, and then u are not embarressed when they say turn up here tomoz, and then do what most people do, spend a little every week getting your kit together and then its not a big hit , all in one go.
Most decent lads will know that yer just startin out, and usually help out

As has been said mate, get the basics, I.E. your own screwdrivers (fairly decent) other smaller hand tool a little lunch box sorry I mean tool box to put them in as everybody will have started off in some way or another. But to turn up with out anything when just a basic set of stuff can be brought for fairly little to me seems like turning up for your first day of college/school and saying please can I borrow a pen!.

As for the vehicle, how old are you if you are young then its not so bad but if you are more mature and don't have your own transport it would make me wonder why etc.

Good luck.

first impressions count for a lot. like previous posts state, just get the basics to start off with. middle of the road tools will do for starters. shop around, screwfix etc. beware of buying from an electrical wholesaler, unless you know them, cos they can be expensive! good luck and remember "buy cheap, buy twice!".

GrannySmiff I'm 22.

Thank you all for the great replies. All your reasons are exactly why I thought it made more sense to get at least some tools because you never know how it will plan out and it's better to be prepared so that you can grab any opportunity that comes your way at a moments notice.
