Hi,

I'm having a slight issue in my house and am not sure what the problem is.

Basically something is causing the circuit breaker to turn off when too much electricity is used.

At the moment all sockets are unplugged and everything is turned off, if I turn one of the socket lines on and plug in one item then it will run fine but if I plug in something that takes more electricity, say the kettle then the breaker wil immediately turn everything off again?

What would cause an issue like this? We've never had any electric issues before and none of the electrics have been modified or changed recently?

Many thanks!

the breaker wil immediately turn everything off again?

Is this an Rcd covering the whole or part of the installation ?
If so any circuit neutral earth fault sharing that Rcd,(not just the socket circuit) will tend to operate the Rcd as soon as any descent load is applied
You may have to be patient and wait for that spark

What you really mean is any fault L-E or N-E will trip the RCD.

My guess is an earth to N fault in the damaged light fitting. This will become a problem when other devices draw large currents.
