Hello guys,
My first post on this forum so appologies if I'm barging in ahead of protocol.
I am about to venture into solar pv installation as I work closely with a local renewable energy heating company.
Having looked into the available relevant courses towards MCS accreditation I notice City & Guilds offer a qualification to C&G 2372. This however is to be replaced by C&G 2399 from 1st November 2010.
Has anyone else here taken the 2372 recently and are aware of any impact this change may have?
Many Thanks, Steve.

Hi Steve. Welcome aboard.

I'm qualified via NICEIC course and not C&G although it is same standard and recognised as such. I think like most here there is a running theme with all current courses and that is lack of practical training for the industry over instruction on how to pass an exam.

Try to seek training providers who employ instructors who have actually done the job. Having someone standing at the front of the classroom who's been there and done that over someone who last week was a plumber I think is so important.

Look over other posts on here and you will soon see other peoples opinion and details of who they have used.

As for the change it may be no more than a C&G update or a limit to size of system qualified in. Pays to look at both course details and compare I would say.

All the best

Hi Steve,

I did the C&G 2372 course at a local college around this time last year. As MarkC has already said unless you are tought by someone with experience of the industry it almost becomes just an exercise in passing the exam. As you may have seen from one of my posts, I've recently been struggling with selecting a mounting frame system. This is an example of an area which I feel is very neglected on the 2372 course. I'm told that Grant renewables run a very good PV course but I know little more than that.

Cheers

Hi
I'm currently on the C&G course (exam on Friday) with a company called ESE in Eynsham, Oxford. I have used PV before but only for running pumps and controllers for solar thermal systems. I have several years experience in the Thermal side of solar so this is a natural progression for me. Anyway, I can't fault ESE as the tutor really knows his stuff. They also sell and fit PV systems and develop their own kit so they are more than just a training centre who is 1 minute teaching PV and then plastering or something the next.
As for as the course being relevant because of a new one in november. Well this industry is moving and evolving so fast, I think that will be the case for a few more years to come.
Fingers crossed for Friday

hello all,my first post of any site.i have recently completed the city and guilds 2372 at
trans euro college near northampton.whilst there,an assessor from city and guilds explained it is a change to the awarding system throughout c & g.so new pv course will be identical as existing(he said).trans euro by the way,i would recommend to anyone planning mcs approval of solar pv.hope this helps

The best way to follow this career path would be to get on one of the approved TEFL courses approved by the British Council.

Electrically it's not rocket science and basically it is an exercise to get you through the course and that MCS grading. I did 1 with Solar skies or some such name back in March and everyone passed, both the erection side and the electrical side, and there were roof fitters there.

If your already a sparks then the electrical side is not daunting. If your already part P then again the paperwork is not daunting either. It's climbing about on roofs, if god meant you to do that he would have made you a roofer.

Hi there,

There is only one place to get this qualification and thats at the Center for Alternative Technology (CAT). These guys are fantastic, the site is set amid the mountains of Snowdonia and the vibe is all abour renewable energy. GO! you wont regret it.
