hi does anyone know if i can claim the vat back for all the tools that i buy for my work , i am not self employed

VAT is a tax specifically designed to screw the end user unfortunately in this case that's you. Maybe you could convince your boss to buy your tools through the business and you pay him the ExVAT price then he could claim back the VAT.

I've moved this to the business section as it's not really a general electrical question.

thanks for the replys , i went on the hmrc site and it says i can get tax relief if i pay for tools out of my own money and i can claim money for washing my work clothes at home , has anyone every claimed this money

Go and see a local accountant. Most will give you their first 30 to 60 minutes free.

If your provided with a uniform for work and have to wash it yourself then yes you get some sort of releaf through your tax code meaning so get a slightly larger personal allowance. Speak to the help line at HMRC and they will guide you through for free.

Its not megger money though, Couple of quid less you pay in tax

but any tools you buy, and whatever you spend, save the receipts till end of year ( march ), and claim. also, if you use your vehicle at any time for work, note the miles and you get c. 45p/mile allowed against tax ( 25p for over 10,000 miles)
