Hi all i'm just curious if anyone knows if there are any colleges in the Glasgow area that offer the nvq's without actually being employed? Im currently looking to try and get into the industry (i know its hard times for everyone just now) but every college ive checked seem to only offer the courses to those that are employed as an apprentice. I would have much preffered going down the apprentice route and have been trying for the past 3 years but with no luck and being 22 now it just seems even harder. Should maybe also add that ive done the SECTT test and got a pass mark but im not sure if that still applies to those looking to become qualified. Cheers in advance.

Not sure how it works in Scotland but down here NVQs (I think they're called SVQs there?) can only ever be done with practical experience on the job - that's the whole point of them.
You may still be able to do the technical certificate on it's own, but from what I can make out all that's about to change...

yeah sorry its the technical certificates im on about I had read that nvq or svq 1 & 2 can be achieved through college but to do 3 you must be employed by someone.

try North glasgow in springburn Cardonald or Stow Its going to be extreemly hard to get an "Apprenticeship" at any age due to the state of play even the big companys who use to take on 20-30 boys have cut right back probably taking on "jimmys son" before a guy off the street The firm I use to work for never started any this year they had 4 time just out and 2 in their second year Have you tried SECTT themselfs asked their advice as they sometimes have firms contact them

Good Luck
