Hi all.

Had an interesting discussion at college today about adding a circuit in a domestic property. The lecturer wants us to think about what we would do by next week.

Ok so there is 2 x 32a ring circuits in the CU (up and down sockets) and a customer wants one extra socket putting in.

You cant tap off the ring because the room has just been decorated.

The CU is only around 2.5 m away from where customer wants socket.

No spare ways on CU, and cant spur off existing ring. Oh and circuits are protected by rcd.

What you think would be best?

Yep i did think so. I will draw a diagram for him i think.

You say spur off CU, would that mean just taking a single t&e 2.5mm to the socket straight off the circuit breaker?

Edit: i have just found section 7.2.2 pg 68 in OSG about non fused spurs off the CU, aslong as it only feeds one twin socket or one permanently connected item of electrical equipment. So i take from this 2.5mm is ok for this.

yes to both. spur direct from MCB in a single 2.5mm as long as it's only 1 socket outlet. (app. 15, BS7671)
