Hi guys, me again.

Following on from my earlier post, I have realised that despite the fact that we have 2 separate 2-gang switches in the living room to control 2 ceiling lights, we always use them as both-on or both-off, never a mixture.

So.... is it possible to convert my 2x 2-Gang 2-Way switches to 2x 1-Gang 2 Way switches?

Is it a simple case of removing the 2-gangs, and putting both wires from the L1's into a single L1 and so on?

Go on, try it.

Do you really expect professionals to give away their skill and knowledge to somebody who's clearly not wanting to pay for work to be done?

More than you might think, and how often do you think I get asked for general computer advice also, on the basis that "I do computers"

Christ, all I asked was a simple question.

And yes, software can kill, what do you think runs just about every electronic device in the country?

If it was that simple you would have sorted it unfortunately it isn't that simple.

There are a few methods for wiring two way lighting have you identified which way it is wired

This is a simple job for somebody that knows what they are doing and has the necessary test equipment if needed to identify cables

what he means is that if you asdvise me, say, on software, and i make a cock-up, the worst that can happen is that my computer will crash. if he advises you on electricity at a lethal voltage, and you cock up, you could kill yourself and/or others.

Point taken, I just wish others on here could communicate like adults and simply answer the question, and tell me I am out of my depth rather than try to belittle me because I am not a sparky.

Thanks to both you and UNG for explaining.

I wasn't trying to belittle you at all. You were arguing with Murdoch and i thought it was laughable that you could compare computer software and electricity in the same light.

I am not saying for one minute that you're job isn't skilled - because i know it is. Just in case anything gets mentioned that im derating your profession.

If you could upload a picture, and it was as simple as you thought then we could maybe advise you on how to do it. But as said, lighting is wired in several ways - and advising you blindly over a forum could be very dangerous.

Hi mate, some people are a bit unnecessarily rude on here, if you take some pictures of the wiring you've got, ill help if I can

If you saw the sort of creatures that come by on this forum from time to time - it's not being unnecessarily rude, it's being hasty and admittedly on very few occasions jumping on the bandwagon.

Not sure the OP will be back lol.

I do see them, but why not just ignore them if you've got nothing nice to say? are people that bored that they need to comment on threads they don't wanna help with? the guy was just asking a question.

I'll remember that next time anybody asks my professional advice.

Thanks.

And your profession is?

Software developer

Lol!!!!

Software developer couldn't work out basic switching... Do you work for amstrad?
Seriously though, if your not confident call a local reputable spark for a minor charge and peace of mind the job will be safe.

I think it's maybe because people are so annoyed with how the trade is heading - and it doesn't help with joe public thinking 'whats the worst that can happen' when it comes to electrics. The whole atitude needs to change in the industry, and if that means shouting down a few chancers on a forum then so be it.

None of us own the trade and if you think a comment on a forum is gonna change the world u be trippin

With the best will odawire, do you see gas fitters explaining how to change thermocoupler to joe public?

It doesn't matter, I just think the attitude is unnecessarily rude, we all have the option to just ignore, and ill bet if these guys were chatting to someone in the pub and the same question was asked they would offer advice

No, but if it puts one person off making a drastic mistake then it's for the greater good isn't it?

What pi$$es me off is that i can bet as much as you like that the OP wouldn't dare attempt domestic gas - so why do the electrics? It's not any less dangerous now is it...

We may not own the trade, but as professional fully qualified electricians we surely have a right to voice our opinion's on the way the trade is heading.

Or they'd maybe give them a price?

Yea of course you have the right to voice your opinion

Odawire
And as I advised the guy asking - an IT guy who already asked on another thread until he got upset because certain members wouldn't relinquish their knowledge
He does not know what to do = so call a local spark.
I know the solution, as do you, and every spark here. It would take less than 30 mins. Guy should call a real electrician

I know most people wont agree with me but I really don't think it is that bad for someone to try to fix there own electrical problems if there not qualified. I think all the red tape we have to wade through confuses people into thinking we're rocket scientists.

Not rocket scientists - but professionals who have spent years of hard graft and education to get to where we are.

If the OP has to ask - then he doesn't have an idea, so he should get someone in to do the job for him.

Would you attempt gaswork on your home if you didn't really know what you were doing?

Im not saying we haven't worked hard but most people have worked hard in there profession, doesn't mean you cant give friendly advice. Yea I might attempt gas work in my home

I seriouslly doubt you would attempt gaswork if you didn't know what you were doing. What im trying to say is people have this thing where they are adamant that they'd never touch gas, but they're happy to do electrics....don't see much difference in principle myself.

I don't mind homeowners attemtping DIY work aslong as it doesn't extend to the installation of new cable. The OP however doesn't know what he's doing, otherwise he wouldn't ask so in my mind - in this instance, he should call a professional.
