I

Innominata

I have been asked to look at a number of commercial toasters that are used in hotels they have a 13amp plug fitted to a quite large flex cable both the plug tops and the wall sockets have been overheating. If the toaster is rated at up to 3KW I would assume the current demand should not be to high.If over 3k would a commando plug and socket be suitable and if so could it be spured off the existing ring or would a new circuit be needed. Thanks in advance

More likely to be poor termination of conductors in the plug, or the pins of plug not in full contact with socket terminals thats causing overheating.

A portable appliance would/should be fused correctly for its kw rating (no commando socket). How about a switched fused next to the existing socket?

What type of commercial toasters are you talking about?

Is it one that is a revolving type if so it should be on a 20A switch not a plug or spur.

Hi Ian,The toaster is a revolving type,I have been told that they are rated at 2.7KW and do have a 13a plug fitted.Would a new plug and socket be ok

If the sockets are old or cheap the internal pins may not grip properly anymore so as long as the toaster checks out just replace both socket and plug top removing any heat damaged cables this should cure all.
