hi guys,
can some body tell me how to test a shower for a fault or where i could get this information. would like to know a bit more on how appliances work and how to solve common faults from a shower, for example if an electric shower was tripping the rcbo out and the cables were fine, what would you do then to find your problem. thanks for any suggestions

replaced a shower for someone once, they had visitors from Ireland over, the shower burst in to flames whilst using it, the solution?

Point the shower at the flames, prob not the best idea whilst naked and wet.

ps Im firm Irish stock sure it was a coincidence!

One problem can be that the shower can be replaced but the customer who wants a more powerfull unit only problem is that it is run in 6mm and is connected to a rewireable fuse so its not obvious that the cable is getting a bit warm or they call you out saying well it has been working ok for the past 9 months why has the control switch burnt out ?

Hi i would do an insulation resistance test on the shower but only live to earth and neutral to earth to see if there is a short on the heating element, if its a dead short you could even just do it with a continuity tester, with the shower isolated at the fuse board just put one probe from your meter on the heating element terminal and the other on the earth terminal, if you got continuity then the element has gone or is on its way out, worth a try anyway, JUST MAKE SURE ITS ALL TURNED OFF AT FUSE BOARD BEFORE MESSING AROUND INSIDE THE SHOWER, sorry if i sound condescending with the capital text but i dont know if you have much experience with electric so better to be safe, you can also do continuity through the heating element as another quick check, hope this helps

I would add though that a typical good TT rod of 100 ohms only needs 3V to have 30mA flowing and so trip an RCD, you might find that sort of N-E...
