O

Morning all, I have been asked to do some commercial work (shops) and was wondering if there is any other qualification I need to be able to do such work? highest cert I have is 17th edition. I know that part P is for domestic so could that mean I can do commercial?

thanks

Scott

the key word mate is 'competence' if your competent mate thats what counts. i know people with loads of quals but it does not mean a thing.i guess there is only you know if your competent to do the work.

You should have at least 2391.

I am not sure, but you probably should be JIB registered as well.

no need for the jib card although you may need the ecs test for sites if it`s site work your doing. as for the 2391 it`s ideal for everyone to have it but i know loads of lads who don`t have it but can install and test better than some that do have it.

Thanks Phil! does this mean I can design, install, test circuits and provide my own certificates (created by myself) for commercial? Also, am I ok to do PIR's? and I'm going to get public liability and indemnity insurance.

And I'm guessing Building Control does not have to be informed?

if its a single supply into the building and if there are Flats / Dwellings above the shops or more importantly off the same supply then the same rules apply as that for domestic, in that you may need to inform building control.

Yes mate, go for it. With regard to your certificates, rather than make your own i would advise you to use the proper ones which are readily available for nowt on the internet, i think the IET website has downloadable ones. The only difference between a domestic and any other cert is that the domestic one says domestic electrical inst cert, instead of electrical inst cert. As far as i know the content on both is identical.

alternatively PM me and i will try and copy the ones i have on my memory stick and somehow email em to you, there are more certs than you will know what to do with.

Cheers..............Howard

PS if my plan is successful i will post and then anyone else who wants can have.

Thanks Howard, just what I needed to hear! I did download the ones from IET site thanks, just assumed they were only domestic but now know I was wrong.

thanks again to everyone who replied.

Nothing to say you cant do commercial, the only person stopping you is yourself,as long as you feel confident enough in what you are doing than go for it,2391 would be an advantage, although there is no law to say you must have it,a usefull place to get smart looking certs are the niceic, you can get green coloured eic.think they are 5 page ones,a pad will cost £10/15 or so,they are made for anyone to use, exactly the same as approved firms red certs, but without serial numbers, you can also get the same green ones for pir.they should be on the nic website shop

You could also look at cert software like PIRForm which will guide you ( to a certain extent) through the forms, provide professional print outs and also file and auto number the certs for you.......
