Hello all,

Im a Journeyman from the States working solo on a Camp in Afghanistan that is using the 17th Edition as its standard. Its like being an apprentice all over again! I have a PDF copy of the 17th Edition but im having a hard time finding some clarificationon on light fixture wiring methods. Is it acceptable to run travelers (3 way in the USA, i beleive they are 2 ways in the UK) through the light fixture? As in, from #1 switch>>light>>light>>light>>light>>light>>#2 switch. These will be run in metal conduit. Im simply trying to avoid a seperate pipe for the travelers. Material is hard to come by out here. Thanks for any help.

If you look up section 559.6.2.1 page 146 on your regs book that covers through wiring on a lighting installation.

I'm assuming you are talking about florescent fittings here which are BS 60598 which do not need heat resistant cable. But you may need to protect the cables if they run through via the ballast/choke unit of the fitting, as they will be exposed to high temperatures. Often on these fittings you will find that the internal wires passing by the ballast/choke do so via an alloy sleeve to protect the wire and this can be utilized.

I think you are describing a 2 way switching of numerous strip lights ie the drawing shows a switch at one end of the room and than say 7 strip light and then a 2nd switch plus the symbol on the switches have a 2 or in other words lights can be switched on or off from either switch.

Travellers or what we call pass wires so from the fuseboard run the conduit to the first light and drop down to the first switch then loop the light circuit from light to light ensuring your pass or travel wires "pass" through each light fitting conduit box
