hi everyone,

i have been offered a job for my boss to change the light fixtures for his business properties which means i will have to alter the existing lighting wiring a little.

The problem is i am not a qualified electrician but just with some basic knowledge of lighting wiring.

am i not alllowed to carry out this type of minor work without the correct qualifications as it is based in commercial properties or can i?

would i need to be a fully qualified electrician to do this or just certain training?

hope to hear from someone soon and thank you in advance

The key thing here is the word competant.

If you are competant then yes you can.

Only you will know the answer to that.

the key word when dealing with electrical work is Competency. if you are competent you could do the work. not being qualified does not make someone less competent but someone with qualifications and experience can back up their competency. the thing you need to assess is can you test it after you have done it? and provide him with a certificate. if yes to the above off you go do the job and everyone is happy if you have any doubts it`s the doubts that you need to think about. not trying to put you off doing it people are quick enough to want a cheap job doing but even quicker to give a name if anything goes wrong

Dont forget that the work you carry out will need testing properly with the correct test equipment before and after you power it up.

Cheers...........Howard

i think i understand what you are trying to tell me.

i believe i am competent at carrying out the work but with regards to the testing and producing a certificate would be where i should get get a someone with the correct training or authority to do so.

thank you every one but please correct it for me if i am thinking it wrong

Biggest problem is mate as the other guys have said you could do the work but you need to test and provide a certificate ,blank certs are easy to get hold of but the test equipment required doesnt come cheap , you culd ask a spark to test it for you but finding one to do it may be a problem as not many will test other people work as they will then be liable

It could be a slave switch where you would have a L in and a common wire out to a master switch.
