Well here's one way of doing it...
Birkett Cable Joints - Underground Cable Jointing Kits
don't forget to get plenty of tape round it and tuck it well up behind the backboard.

Cable joint kit = £30 + much embuggerance, cost of a few metres of 25mm sq?
