Hi everyone I have a question does anyone know if its worth registering with construction line & chas if your only registered under the niceic domestic installer scheme or is it a no go untill you have the approved contractor scheme under your belt ?
Any advise would be much appreciated :)

It all depends of what your customers require, why join anyone and pay money if your customers don't care either way? Chas is 350 a year and it is a lot of money for a logo on the van unless you are told you have to be in them, are you just private domestic? or work for builders?

Thanks for the reply at present I'm a subbie on domestic new builds but looking to try get my foot in the door by tendering myself and getting a few sparks on the books, find it annoying someone making 6-8 hundred pound profit by sitting in an office after winning a tender and subbing it out wasn't sure if the likes of kier ect require you to have approved contractor statues or if domestic installer would be sufficient ;-)

well in that case then yes if you have chas plus the NICEIC then it may help you with some contractors when it comes to getting on their lists, some builders are bodgers, some like to do everything by the book haha, so if your intent on employing sparks you will need a health and safety scheme anyhow to ensure they are protected.

Can I still register if I'm domestic installer or do I have to go approved contractor before I would get a look in the only reason I'm asking is I have only been trading 6 months (16 years experience with full qualifications ) and read on an earlier thread you have to be trading for 2 years before you can apply for approved, I can't seem to find where it says this on the niceic website though lol

you can sneak in the back door with Chas if you have SSIB accreditation with Someone like Exor for example, thats how I just renewed my Chas, I don't think the approved contractor scheme is a must though, it's all about health and safety and the right insurance, I have a feeling after thinking about this today Fella that domestic installer should be enough with a health and safety policy.

If you are only doing domestics then you will only require the DI scheme, CHAS is more about H&S issues such as risk and method, ppe, inductions, toolbox talks, training in H&S(manual handling, asbestos awareness, work at height, 1st aid), H&S Policy, Fire RA and much more.

It took me about 2 months to get the Accreditation but now everything is in place it makes for a much more user friendly and adaptable with regards to our H&S performance.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I forgot to say that if you are wanting to work for Local Authorities then CHAS is almost a must, it also cuts out alot of crap when you are applying to get on large company supply chains
