Hi, i've got a few questions regarding consumer unit connections;

My first question: On a split load consumer unit does every circuit need to be protected by RCD e.g. lights ?

Second question: If a high integrity consumer unit has two unprotected circuits next to the main switch, do they have to have RCBO or would MCB protection be sufficient enough to meet the 17th edition wiring regulations?

Third question: A 6mm SWA cable going to a shed to a small consumer unit with RCD - supplying a ring main and lights - will the cable need 32amp RCBO on the main consumer unit in the house or just 32amp MCB protection?

Thanks in advance.

Hi al

question !!!!

DB1 in house ( dual rcd ) feeding small ccu in garage with swa !!! this in turn will feed a swa to a garden shed!!!

Question !!!

i fully under stand 30ma rcd,s in line is a no no !!! so can i install the garage unit with just a main swith and no rcd/main switch and in turn feed the shed via swa from ccu in garage !!!

Question !!!

because of feed from db1 being on a rcd i can not tt the garage ccu so will have to export the earth from db1 . iunderstand you can do this as long as there is no extranios conductive parts in out buildings also i am going to rely on the rcd in db1 ( house ) to protect all the out side installation!!!! i know that if a neutral earth fault occures it will knock half the board out in db1 but can not see any other way round it !!!

Question !!!!

would you guys and girls approach it in the same manner

thanks
Richard

yes your right ,although if doing periodic inspection you found no rcd in bathroom but it was bonded you could get away with a code 4 for it
not that it helps any in this case

i would put some tale blocks on and fit a seperate 1 way unit in the house for the garage
Make sue you use an RCD unit with 32 Afor sockets if 1 socket a 16 A MCBO and 6 A for your lights,And always get it certified. So no a 1 way unit ant gud,you got to remember cable size, contaiment and above all saftey.

Not sure what you are saying in the section quoted so will ask you the question: Does a consumer unit have a main switch?
