At the moment I have 8 posts dotted around, lighting up the car park- unsure of the lamp type. They are switched through a 25A contactor brought on by a timer.I'm looking to do away with the timer and have a switch in reception to manually operate the lights and also a switch that will delay the lights going off- around ten mins. To allow time for locking up etc.Can anyone tell me if a time lag switch will do and can this switch contactor?

the contactor coil will be minimum load, so switching this wont be a problem,, your OP is a lil unclear,, your gona need a cable from the reception to the contactor to allow them to switch it from there. im asuming this isnt a long run? volt drop etc!
as for the delay switch again where and how is this going to be positioned? as your only switching a coil of a contactor then your only dealing with small control loads a small din rail mounted timer relay switched via momentery contact switches will do the trick here but again if your talking long distance then think about the volt drop...

The run is around 25m from switch room to reception.I want to fit two X 1 gang switches in reception. 1 switch to manually operate car park lights and the other a time lag switch rated at 16A.The time lag switch is to allow the last person out at night enough time get out and lock up etc. A 1 gang time lag switch would be easier to fit rather than a Din rail mounted switch, I assume which if done this way would replace the timer that's already there.

ahh i see so all control is from reception,,, then as you described it, I think it sounds good. and at 25mtrs there will be no problems controlling the contactor (50 mtr) total live run. waits for the buns to be thrown( no I havnt worked out the calc) :)

couple of things I can forsee Time lag and "Burning up" time for lamps and what about person opening up in the morning?

would it be possible to put the time lag switch in paralelle with the normal switch. the time lag closes the switch between the live and switch live as the standard switch does. so when the receptionest or whoever wants to leave, push the time lag and turn off the normal switch and when the time lag deavtivates, the lights goes off.

I see what your saying about the mornings. The place doesn't open up until 9am so there will be enough natural light. The manual override switch will be connected in parallel with time delay switch.Although one of the time lag switches I saw said not suitable for switching contactors...however if I am only energising the primary side of the coil I thought a standard 10A or 16A time delay switch would be suitable. This is where two years with house bashers gets you!

They reckon it's going to save them money. instead of setting timer at different times of the year, operating them manually is a better solution.

Providing the lights are not metal halide or sodium, wouldn't a PIR be a lot easier? No need to remember to turn off switches and press time lag, every employee gets the benefit of light on the way out, the person covering the other that usually does it but is on holiday does not need to worry about it.
