I was asked to look at a job late yesterday where double oven has stopped working so called out an oven engineer to look at it and he said nothing wrong with oven there is no power from cooker switch. I had a look and there is power leaving c/u but not arriving at switch. Customer did complain of an electrical burning smell coming from oven but I could neither see or smell evidence of this. Cannot see how the cable is routed he said it was done when kitchen extension was built 20 years ago, having taken plinths off units can see all manner of dodgy wiring so my concern is that thre maybe an inaccessible high resistance joint in the cable that has burnt. But then why would it take this long to manifest itself? Any other theories?

If you can see bad wiring it probably is what you suggest, a JB tucked away somewhere. This is where one of those new fangled thermometer cameras would probably come in handy, good luck in finding it, sounds like its gonna need a re-wire to me.

Have you carried out a continuity test on cores? Disconnect from CU and cooker put link between Live and earth take reading do same for Neutral. You should then be able to determine if a core is broken or high resistance.

No access this is the problem otherwise I would just pull in a new feed but c/u is in garage and cables are buried in walls and under floors which have since been ceramic tiled. Customer made me laugh though, suggested I disconnect cable from cu and pull it out with new one attached, if only it was that simple

With all due respect, you either know what your doing or you do not, if you do, there is no need to ask the question, if you don't, call an electrician who does.

It's a bit of a worry that you called out another "trade" who had to tell YOU that there was clearly a fault on the circuit, FFS, what training have you had, one of those Electrical Trainee courses I suppose, or are you really a kitchen Fitter who did a Part P course and now thinks he know it all, when clearly you don't...

If this is harsh, I make no apologies, people on this forum have trained and worked hard all their career, why should you think you can simply come here and use this knowledge and experience as a substitute for you being capable, regardless of any paperwork you may/may not have. This is an easy job that simple needs common sense FFS, if you cannot find a simply fault like this then I suggest a career change to dry liner!!

Sounds like someones upset you today!! ..lol!! Bit harsh, but at the end of the day, a perfectly reasonable observation!!

What "upsets" me is that people who know nothing or precious little come to these forums and ask questions of people who have worked bloody hard for many years to gain industry standard qualifications, accreditation and years of experience when they cannot even be bothered to perform the most basic of task to perform the job, or even before asking a question...that frustrates the hell out of me.
