The cooker in the house i rent out went on fire yesterday yesterday. The tennant called my brother who just lives next door (also an electrician) to look, he said he saw smoke and flames coming from the back of the cooker, first thing he did was switch the mains off. He noticed the fuse wire in the old rewireble fuse was not of the correct rating, far too thick which would suggest why the fusewire didn't snap and cut the power earlier. he didn't have his tools with him to further investigate just disconnected the cable from the board, so im going today to have a better look. Any ideas what to look out fro? its an old cooker 10+ years i think. I was thinkin cooker is gone but why g o on fire?, any suggestions much appreciated, never happened to me before

cheers

Hi.

I think I'd be more worried about the tennant complaining to someone as it sounds like you could be in a spot of bother with the electrical side of things.

Is it let through an agent???

nop pivate landlord thankfully, really should have checked out electrical before guy moved in and its something i will be doing, hes a mate anyway so no worries there. Even more worrying the 30 a rewirable fuse had the incorrect rating of fuse wire in far too thick i dunno what it was, also no isolation switch for cooker, cooker cable 6mm twin going from board to double socket in the kitchen above worktops, then to cooker outlet behind the oven. Couldn't believe it. then when i took socket off the lives literally fell out the terminal, also the mains was joined using connector block behind the socket, can only assume cable cut too short, not properly earthed, no grommets used, u get the idea. Couldn't believe what i was seeing, not surprised the thing went on fire.

If you are renting out a property then, whoever is in there, you have a duty of care to ensure that it is safe to be occupied.

I would suggest you get a PIR done and any problems sorted.
