Legal ones I hope. The IET website would be a good place to start.

Just in case I'm going to request in advance please nobody post links to copyright infringing material in the open forums.
marvo is right.

isp's are required by law to give your contact information to the police If they believe you are distributing pirated content.

Re: Has anyone got gn3 , 17th edition in a pdf format?

They also send the forum 'take-down notices' under DMCA regulations for links to copyrighted material to be removed even though the actual file might not be hosted on the site.

Yeah, to be honest I've got no time for their copyright enforcement racket and I live in a country where sharing is caring and it's perfectly legal for personal use. If the OP knows where to look there's free copies of the regs, the amendments and the OSG splattered all over the web.

That’s me and you fallen out then.

I’ve nailed two people for copyright infringement, got a third one in the gun sights at the moment.

Which is not the UK, so your opinion and suggestion we should breach copyright is not good IMHO.

If we all take free copies who will pay to get this stuff created in the first place.

If my son was doing an apprenticeship, and was struggling to make ends meet, I would buy him the necessary regs books. That said if he was spending it all down the pub, he'd be on his own.

My opinion is firmly anti-copyright, I believe there's better models around that allow creators and inventors to get paid which don't stunt innovation and in the digital age serve to do nothing but make lawyers rich and encourage copyright trolls. I didn't however suggest anyone breaks their local laws, my first post in this thread warned about not posting links that would illegally distribute unauthorised content.

You'd need to define the word 'free' for me to answer. If free means people don't need to part with money then there's numerous business models that allow artists and authors to get paid. Also, especially with literature/books it's very common for the author not to be the copyright holder, he has to sign his rights away to get the book published so arguing that copyright laws enrich the artists and authors is a bit of a stretch.

In which case there’s no point in developing anything! I’ve spent a fair amount of time in R&D, most of it not electrical.

For some research papers I was sponsored by a major manufacturer and they were made open access. Which is the reason I wanted to write them.
Metallurgy process control is restricted to my former employer and they control the world wide rights.
My artwork and photography is where I get very protective. If I find who it is I will sue, and win. Usually with punitive damages.
My engineering drawings are again open access with the proviso I get credited with the work.

Marvo, go away, write or develop something you’re proud of and then say “it’s OK if someone nicks it.”

The copyright laws are sanctioned in most of the free world.

Your comments please.

i dont believe no copywrite but what I do belive in is

gpl licensing, a lot of companies are switching to this model.

bassically companies pay a fee to license the product but its free for personal/non profit use

I use a few software programs like this.

If you use the music industry as an example.

They hated illegal digital downloads.

Napster being the first.

Then P2P usegroups etc.

Then big corporations got involved. Apple etc.

Now illegal downloads are getting less and itunes , google and amazon are making a killing.

Same with on demand films and T.V

The studios fought tooth and nail against it so we all did it illegally.

After a long battle the usual suspects got licencing and we all happily pay for it in a different way.

Why should I buy my copies of technical books and then be expected to pay over the original price again just to read what I already own???

Just a mild rant and my tuppence worth :)

I completely agree with the whole concept of your work being your property and it should be up to you to decide whether you want to share it freely, charge for it or lock it away in a vault somewhere.

What I don't agree with is the cost of buying the various regulations and British standards we are expected to work to. I can appreciate printing costs for hard copies, but does it really cost ÂŁ80 to print a regs book?

For my tuppence worth,if I want to download something for my own use and not distribute it then I should be able to,what I really resent is the government allowing the BBC to have us all over, they do this because in a sense the BBC is a government mouthpiece! For example you pay your license fee and then with the exception of sport, which incidentally I hate with a passion you are treated to an endless round of repeat programmes. Now since I paid my license fee several years ago to watch One foot in the grave,or Last of the summer wine, then why should I pay to watch them again? At the minute there is nothing on the BBC except the commonwealth Games,in which I have no interest whatsoever,so why not show it on BBC2 and leave the normal programming alone? No! it's a natural assumption that we ALL want to watch it.This country is becoming more like a communist state every day,the government telling you what you can and cannot do and spying on you from all angles.Well let me remind you all of something from when I was a youth. Now back in the day we all wanted CB on 27Mhz and Maggie thatcher fought tooth and nail to stop it as and I quote "it would be undesirable to allow large numbers of people to communicate freely" In the end we got our 27Mhz frequency back in 1981,however it came not as we wanted,on the AM band but on FM,thereby giving a limited range,so in effect Maggie got her own way. It's the same now with all this monitoring internet traffic,it's not about copyright or anything like that,it's a back door way of keeping an eye on everybody, big brother all over again. If you use certain words or phrases in any internet conversation it's automatically flagged up by the CIA,Don't believe a word of what they tell you it's all about keeping control.
