cord is usually a term used for flexible cable, as in the cord fitted to an appliance, whereas trhe term cable covers all sorts.
 
thinking back.....

60's.... drainpipes
70's.... flares
80's ... levis and wrangler jeans
90's on.... whatever is cheap and fits round my expanding gut and fat arse.
