evening all

usually when I have to core drill for fans for a job with my company- we pick up the makita core drill from office happy days

but I have a private job coming up that needs a hole drilled for fan- and I don't have my own core drill

can I use the drill below- just use the drill setting

Blue HSS or orange HSS?

There's an FTH place next door to Wilsons in guildford now so it's a case of popping next door to hire stuff when I pick up the materials.

To be honest for a core drill I just borrow one from my mate the plumbob (if I can't con them into drilling it for me)
On that note have you ever crossed paths with mr Sines and his merry band of plumbers?

i think I will meet a sines man tomorrow. What are they like? Decent or Cowboys?

Whichever one it is please do wind them up at every available opportunity!

Typical plumbers at times, but the finished job is always good and very clean and tidy.

I served my apprenticeship at the same company as one of them, we both interviewed for the electrical job but I got it and he ended up with the plumbers.

do you rub that in at every opportunity?

You can get away with diamond coring with an SDS machine for occasional holes but prolonged use will cause overheating and potentially damaging your power tool.

The power tool you have highlighted actually has a maximum coring capacity of 68mm. I am not aware of any SDS machine on the market that is rated to core above 90mm so when coring for fans you will be using the machine above its capacity no matter which SDS machine you choose.

Also bear in mind that the SDS shank on the adaptor may not be up to driving a large diameter core drill, especially if the adaptor is of cheap manufacture. Breakages can occur which could damage the chuck of the power tool. An SDS shank is only just under 10mm diameter with quite a lot of material removed for the grooves and is not designed for high torque applications.

The recommended rotation speed for a 5" core is 520rpm. Most SDS machines run at over 1000rpm so with a 5" core you will be running at potentially more than twice the recommended speed. This can cause damage and excessive wear to the diamond core segments.

There is also the consideration that the clutch is not set to suit coring on an SDS machine and this will hamper progress as it kicks in too readily

Errr, I know of a couple of guys, who are very handy cutting core holes in concrete. They normally only work weekends or bank holidays. They're a bit banged up at the moment, and aren't available. However fingers crossed they might get off...sorry become free because of their age. I'll keep you posted.

Sorry they are unavailable for the foreseeable future. They have a colleague, but he seems to have scarpered. Someone tells me he's come into money.

how often will you need to use it? Would renting one from a tool hire place be more cost effictive... and might give you an idea of good brands...
