Hey guys .. I am an electrician time served for a couple months now. I was thinking if furthering my education in the form of an HNC electrical engineering course simply because all i do with my current employers is domestic work , and i feel as though ive learned everything i possibly can with them. What im wondering though is if it is worth it in the sence of will i learn more about other aspects of being an electrician? Will it open more job opportunities for me in the future? And will it improve me all round ? Only thing that would stop me at this moment is the earning aspect. What do you think guys?

Thanks,
Daniel Todman

HNC is a big commitment around work. I can assure you. It's either a day off a week, or two evenings. Why don't you try getting involved with industrial and commercial work first. Anything you do in the HNC will hardly be relevant to house bashing anyway.

A HNC is an engineering degree, and without work experience would probably not benefit you really
I wouldn't have thought that would help your experience as an electrician, especially when you've only just qualified
the electrical field is vast, maybe you just need to find a new firm to work for which are based in another field

its certainly never a bad thing to learn new things and can only be a good thing
but if you have a secure job at the moment, the ways things are many would think you fortunate, I wouldn't jeopardise that unless you've got something solid to move onto!

I have been qualified for 9 years now, started off in an apprenticeship and completed up to 2391 qualification. I have worked in domestic, commercial and industrial environments. In the last year or so I've began to start thinking about the future a little more. I don't fancy being on the tools for another 30 years doing what I'm doing now.

Since I only have nvq level 3 and my gcse's is it likely I would need to do some kind of bridging course before trying to tackle a HNC? My local college also offer a BTEC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Has anyone done this on here? Would it be of any use before taking on the HNC? Looking towards designing the electrical installation rather than installing it in the future.

I plan to have a chat with the local college at some point but would be interested in people's on here beforehand.

The best way to put theory in to practice is by being a plant electrician where you will get to do maintenance, faultfinding and small installations. You will need a good grasp of mechanical problems and how a process works, etc. It takes time but you pick it up as you go along. You have got to convince an employer you have the aptitude for this kind of work. But bear in mind this is nearly always shift work so you are going to have to fit you’re studies around this.

I’ve spent all my working life in heavy production engineering and enjoyed most of it. (I didn’t enjoy being seconded in to production management).

Hi,
The ONC and HNC Electrical/Electronic Engineering courses have nothing in common with Electrical Installation work. They are based purely on electrical and engineering principles, but will give you some greater in depth knowledge of some of the equipment you will come across in the future. If you ask me , is it worthwhile; then I would say yes. Not now but in the future when you are maybe looking at management it can be a very valuable asset. Just tuck it away in the cupboard it will be useful long term, but it is a lot of work! If you were to go ahead with it you may find you can jump straight into the HNC, but check with your local college first, it will save you two years of hard work.

Regards.

You'd learn about electronic theory, mechanical engineering theory and calculations, basic PLC control etc. As for being an electrician I'd say it won't improve you - experience does that. I have my ONC & HNC and its helped me do well at my place of work, I've worked in industry for 13 years though and it's more PLC and VSD. It can open up better opportunities (lots of jobs specify HNC/HND) but you need to have the experience in that field for it to be worthwhile. My opinion anyhow, others may disagree.

I'm afraid it's not an engineering degree, it's not a foundation degree course either, that would be HND!!

What it will give you, is a sound all round foundation in both Electrical and Electronics, that will almost certainly put you in good stead for ongoing employment in the industrial sector and future employment as a whole.
Most production line industrial companies now days, are all electronics as far as controls are concerned, and more often than not, want it's maintenance technicians to hold a HNC qualification.

It will also be a distinct advantage, if and when you want to progress into the management side of things. To my mind it's a no-brainer, for the younger guy with the right attributes who wants to look after his future prospects...
