Could someone give me a bit of advice....

At work we have been installing wireless thermostats, Honeywell ones, and I was thinking Id like one at home. But I have little experience with my system that is at home. From what I know I have the following :

Back Boiler
Pump
Tank in the loft
Thermostat on the stairs
Time clock, either Hot water or Hot water and Heating options.
Double surface backbox with all the connections and blanking plate.

Basically a gravity fed system I think.

I may be being a thicko but you only know if you have experienced it before. I want to know hot the system works and whether I would be able to install said wireless thermostat.

The way we do it at work is when there is a combi boiler installed we just run a cable to feed the spur which feeds the wireless controls wired with a 5 core flex to the boiler. (just for infomations sake)

Yep sounds like a gravity system. You can swop the existing roomstat with a wireless one if you want but why would you?

Basically your back boiler heats the water, hot water rises and so forms a circulating current of hot water, the heating takes some of this hot water and pumps it round the rad circuit controlled by the room stat.

To install one would mean just taking the live/switch wires through the reciever unit. I suppose you may want to change the position of the existing room stat but otherwse it seems a waste of time and money

Definitely sounds like a gravity system. Considering you already have a room stat and programmer fitted then it seems a little pointless spending a good wedge of money on a room stat you can wander around with. Gravity systems are fairly inefficient anyway compared to a modern S-Plan set up so I'd save my money for when the boiler packs up and you need to spend out on an expensive new condensing boiler.

Thanks chaps. The reason I was asking is that my boiler is on the way out i think, been quoted £1500 all in for a combi. This would make easier sense to install the wireless stat with but decisions need to be made. Thanks a lot people.
