What is the equation to convert AC voltage to DC voltage?

I was under the impression that the 230V AC RMS was the equvilent to 230 DC, but after reading somewhere that us qualified sparkys are qualified to voltages up to 1000V AC or 1500V DC, im a little confused.com.

Any help appreciated with as much possible detail please if poss, thanks...

I believe these are the limits of voltages you may come across in your line of work, a.c. would be unusual to exceed 400v but d.c is common in electronics at higher voltages, anything higher then extra training or knowledge is needed to be safe.
