I agree - there comes a point where consumers must take responsibility for what they've bought - hiring a foreign tradesman with no PL insurance, no competent persons scheme, no UK qualifications etc is a bit like buying electrical goods from some chav in a pub, without seeing them work first.
Cowboys may be immoral and they shouldn't rip people off, but they do, and there are certain steps everyone can take to safeguard themselves.

Is that the one with that big fat guy? I have issue with that programme - 'Don't trust any tradesman that posts a leaflet' he says. That's how I get most of my work, and I work bloody hard at it. Chucking rain or baking sun I'm out there, going door to door, trying to get some work, just for some moron like him just to say 'don't trust leaflets'. Hate most of these programmes to be honest, the presenters rarely have any gounding in what they're talking about, and hey just seem to say if someone does a job badly, then anyone who works in any similar way will be the same.

Consumers need to take a bit of time, get several quotes and start getting rid of these cowboy morons.

it is the big guy yeh. i thinks he has got one of those diseases one gets at an old age as all he does is constantly repeat himself. the times i have watched it he always has the same shirt on, i bet he sleeps in that leather jacket aswell

Totally agree Rocker. Watched this prog the other morning. They featured a bodged bathroom and TBH it was a mess. However he was commenting on the cast iron stack pipe where someone had pieced a new UPVC section in using a rubber connector. It wasn't the best job in the world and I would have renewed the whole section in UPVC. However he called it a bodge, because they used this conncetor. . Well I got news for him. The joint they used was a proper BBA approved drainage connector for joining pipes of different materials and /or diameters. I've used loads of them, mainly underground, all approved by LABC. Trouble is anyone who sees someone using one of these joints will think it's a bodge because some "expert" on the tele says so. Utter drivel.

That one was on last Tuesday, wasn't it. I saw it and thought EXACTLY the same thing. Bit rough maybe, but totally legitimate. (The rest of it was. in fairness, bloody awful, but the fact remains he kept coming back to the one legitimate part of it!). Same as when Rogue Traders do someone for trying to sell a 17th board on a 16th installation, and don't explain why, then whenever we tell someone with an old revo cart fuse carrier they need a new board it's 'I don't need an RCD, the telly told me. You're a conman'.

it`s bad enough trying to convince them anything before they get all that miss information. i am not in a scheme so it does not affect me but i annoyed the hell out of me when the good old mr name that is the same as twin said on a local radio programme that any electrical work in a house is illegal without using a electrician thats not in a scheme. when the guy asked him what sort of electrician they should use he said nic electrician. now i don`t expect him to promote the other schemes but i did expect him to answer honestly and not miss inform. lets say i listened to that and an napit or elecsa spark turned up at my house the next day, well he would not be doing any work for me and there is really noting he can say to persuade the customer. enough of the local councils will not use anyone thats not in the nic and it`s a great shame that people are loosing out
