M

monkee

what do you perfer...

ive been fitting Wylex for some time now and really have no issues except the buzz bar and may be the top terminal rails lay out.

so I started to use Starbreaker boards I had to fit these years ago on the House bashing days with the local authority I remember how easy and confident thay

are to use. So now I went in to my supplier to order a CCU yesterday and could not decide which one to buy and stood there ( I think my coffee went cold

before hadmade up my mind )

what do you perfer Hager..Haha.

The one and only issue i have with Crabtree starbreaker boards is the lack of flexibility which for a disorganised sparx like me isn't very useful at all.

Fit alot of Hager both domestic and industrial and have no issue's with Hager boards at all.....just wish Hager would stop stamping thier name on the front of the domestic white fittings, kinda spoils them.

MK or contactum Starbraker is a great design but it's the units themselves I don't like (which are the same in this case). Not what I'd call user friendly to add circuits at a later date, knockouts in particular The other issue is they just look like a grey box on the wall covered in stickers, obviously not an issue if they're hidden in a cupboard but quite a rubbish sight if they're not

Wylex all day long there flexible and if you look at a Crabtree and wylex board they are exactly the same and made in the same factory it's just the internal fixtures that differ oh and a wylex 10 way fully loaded dual rcd board for ÂŁ60 can't be bad :)

Think I have had 3 duff breakers from the last 50 installs, hager hmm nasty IMO thin plastic casing and considering wylex were the only manufacturers years ago and hundreds of thousands of homes still having old wylex boards that ok not to standards now but still have done a good job for all them years

I agree with you to a certain extent, but that was the Wylex of old, not the poor quality that seems to have become apparent in recent years. You only need do a Google search about Wylex 'recalls' to see that they are not as good as they once were. But if you're happy with Wylex then that's all that matters.

Cheers

You had the likes of Bill and MEM which were much much better quality than anything Wylex have ever produced. I took out a old bell 4 way fuse box a few months back and despite being installed probably late 50s it was like new....can't say the same for a wylex...anything

Ceramic > wood, surprisingly

My 2p worth:
Crabtree starbreaker boards fitted in 1992 to bs3871 can STILL be fitted with the latest RCBO's. If I was paying i'd put me money on crabtree!
Wylex were bad for a couple years but are now excellent quality MCB's/RCBO's
MK used to be my favourite but have gone downhill IMO especially they're plastic boards.
MEM I would never buy again, they deliberately made they're new range of MEMshiled 3 not backward compatible and then quadrupled the price of the old memera/memshield Bits and bobs- Absolute rip-off that has seen many 12 year old units changed just becuase the rcd is faulty, new RCD ÂŁ120 RCBO pod ÂŁ75

Ive been fitting a lot of Wylex recently and find them decent quality, reasonable price and an easy install. Before that was using MK but changed as I found they were starting to get cheap and nasty. Of course for a price there are some better quality units out there but the Wylex do the same job and the customer likes the cheaper price!

Used loads of hager split load boards lately and haven't had a problem with them. Loads of space and nicely laid out IMO

I use hager 90% of the time. If when quoting i feel the customer maybe the 'cheapest option' type of person i'll go elsewhere, i.e. wylex, mk, contactum...

Wylex aren't too bad from my past experiences but i prefer hager whereever possible...more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and thats quality.
