Hi all,
I went to an interview today at a prestigeous sporting arena in London, they were advertising for a sparkie at 28 - 30k. The shock that I got when the interviewer passed me across a run down of the duties that I would of been expected to do, well my jaw just dropped. They wasn't looking for a sparkie, they were looking for a maintenance manager on the cheap. Honestly, by rights I reckon that it was a post that should of attracted a salary of at least 40 - 45k. WELL above my paygrade.

It is indeed a sad reflection of todays industry climate.

Much the same as large companies employing improvers to do approved sparks jobs.

I had a similar one a few years back. Part of the job spec sent to me mentioned:

  • Excellent IT skills required
  • PLC programming
  • Good communicator
  • All the usual blurb
When we got talking about IT they went on about Visual Basic? Powerpoint? The usual things an engineer needs like Excel, Access and Word were totally washed over.
The PLC work alone would occupy a programmer full time!!
I would be required to attend the MD’s morning meeting to give reports on development work???

All for the princely sum of £35K, any overtime included in salary, callout 24/7!!!!
