You lot have never lived until you've banged in a crampet .

1/ drill hole and Rawlplug into the brick

2/ place pipe against the wall or floor (standard use is to hold galv. conduit onto the floor before pouring the screed)

3/ hit into place using a lump hammer and a bolster

4/ I use them for something entirely different - holding oval conduit to the wall, but a little adjustment is required first

This is the way I was taught.

OMG! ...i know im getting old when someone asks when a young sparkie asks what a crampet is, are you telling me that a still used and available fixing method isn't even mentioned in college these days?

Like already mentioned of their uses we had it as a prefered method for fixing along joists etc where it wouldn't be in line of sight (as it not the prettiest method) and it was significantly faster than saddling, but yes on OP's case if you need to drill then unless your scrimping so much on the cost then use saddles.

I wasn't shown them in college when i was in college, it was only when I got onto site and sen them used I knew what they were and that was 17 years ago so a apprentice now is never going to have seen one.

The speed at which colleges churn out trainees, there is the likelihood that they won't learn about a lot of things.

Can anybody say that they learn about crumpets at school or college? No of course not. They learn't about those things out on the streets. (on the job, perhaps)

I remember being told that we didn't need to know anything about IT systems since you very rarely need it in the real world. One of my first jobs out of college was to work in an environment where earth dumping resistors were used. Its not the fault of the trainers since they were probably taught the same thing when at college.

Crampets are useful for a quick cheap fix where the pipework is hidden and needs to be secured for various reasons and if not taught at college then you will eventually come across it out on site.

Well, when someone sticks one in your hand on site, it's not going to take you long to figure out what to do with it (unless you're a really dim bulb)
Bit like a crumpet really..........
