Why's that then?

I bought the crimper in the OP in the end with the Electrfix discount it was ÂŁ31.07 it works well but requires strong hands!
the s
Screwfix crimps however are rubbish as per the reviews on their website.

Is it ok to crimp onto solid wires? I was always under the impression (from years ago working in the defence industry, admittedly more of a precision work on electronic connectors) that crimps should only be onto stranded wires - any comments?

Having worked in the defence industry myself (ship refits in rosyth) we were in the habit of using calibrated crimping tools (my first job as an apprentice was calibrating said tools). Having left the defence sector quite a few years ago i haven't seen a calibrated tool since....lol That said good quality tool and crimps should be ok on solid cables

I crimp components like discharge resistors, then I tin the ends in with silver solder for a better mechanical connection....there's not much I see used with solid wire outside of small controls cabinets and SELV panel gear these days, even lighting gear trays just have a big slab of a printed circuit board inside on the new ones....

If you are looking to spend a few coins and are wanting professional grade crimp tools, you could look at cable craft on google, they sell to the railways and power companies....
I got given a set of ÂŁ60 crimpers 3 years ago by a good old sparky that I was working with....first day working beside him, he insisted that I accepted them and had a couple of sets of the same himself....I used them for a while (3 hours on the day I was given them) then some bgger stole them before the end of the day out of my toolbag...
I bought a really good unbranded set in Glasgow for ÂŁ15.00 from a well known purveyor of tools for all (which has a website shop too) and they do me fine.... I have them in my tool belt...
