Can anyone give me tips and top techniques for using heat shrink after crimping cables?

I'm extending the cables for a CU install and want to use heat shrink - previously only put the crimps on - but I see from other posts that heat shrink on top is the way to go.

Tried this out (see pic) but struggled to heat evenly round heat shrink - and this was with a bit of test cable.

How the hell do you do this in cramp space behind CU? What are you guys using the provide the heat source? Is something like this the way to go?

How well does it work with very limited space and a number of cables to do?

Any suggestions/ advice gratefully received... :)

I would stagger the joints so they're not all in the same place. Slide the heatshrink over one of the cables, crimp the joints then shrink the tubing.
If there are a lot of cables in a confined space I'm not sure if I would feel comfortable waving a hot heat gun around if it were likely to damage the cables. I would try using a soldering iron, or in the past I have even used a cigarette lighter. Otherwise I have the dewalt heat gun in the next picture down from yours (£22 in Screwfix).

You can buy a plumbers heat protection mat. plumbers use it to protect other soldered joints and paintwork etc from the blow torch.

Place it under the cable your going to use the heat gun on and the others are then protected.
