SmartCards are much harder to forge than plain printed cards
Counterfeit cards can easily be detected using an inexpensive card reader
SmartCards not only provide faster access to CSCS data, they may be used for other applications too
Information on CSCS cards can potentially be updated electronically without having to apply for a replacement card

Good idea, would also enable qualifications to be stored as well. I still think there are far too many schemes that tradesmen have to be part of overall. Be it for H&S type stuff ie PASMA or industry specific qualifications. It costs the smaller tradesman an arm and at least part of a leg to keep pace. An overal simplication would be nice, across all licensed trades (or trades that should be licensed).

Great idea mate - but it'll just give the powers that be another excuse to dip our pockets. So its a no vote from me.

i think the problem isnt with forged cards, although they exist, its with the certificates. its almost impossible to know if some types are real or not, especially if the certificate is old. alos im sure that the JIB ect, dont have the time to check each and every one properly. they accept photocopies for goodness sake!

saying that, thereis no way i would send my originals!
