depends on the requirements in the garage, you wouldn't install a CU for one socket or just a light. And of course, it depends how far the garage is from the property.

I'm using swa for the outside sockets, the lights are under a lean to with a plastic roof so it gets warm in the sun what type of cable shall i use?

Getting warm isn't too much of a problem, it just derates the cable a bit which you can allow for in your calcs, but if it is in direct sunlight you can not use pvc T&E as the UV degrades it. If it is just a lean to it would probs be sensible to use water proof fittings.
