I will be using some work I'll be doing for a friend, for my assessment with a governing body. Clearly I want to get things right, not just for my assessment. A friend wants his CU replaced. It is currently positioned inside a wall unit in his kitchen, but fixed directly to the building fabric. It is over 300mm from the sink etc, and you would not have to learn over any hob etc to get to the CU. However, the CU would not be located in a zone of 450-1200mm. However, I believe this (Part M1) only applies to new dwellings. Is there any thing else I need to consider, re the positioning of the CU? Effectively, I will be replacing the CU to the original position.

I was told that it should be "in reach" (ie no access equipment needed to get to it) Ideally within the building regs requirements and in new build, there should be no reason to comply. However, retro fit as required and note on Completion cert.

When you are changing in existing properties there is NOTHING in the regs about the height what so ever. So if its up a ladder now so can the new one be.

If however its right next to the sink or bath or shower common sense says you need to improve the situation

Which scheme are you joining?

Going for ELECSA. Seems to be the best one for me, small domestic work. Yep suggested moving if possible, but I don't think there's much scope as the meter box is on the other side of the wall (outside) where CU is.

In life there are 3 robins. Robin hood, robin red-breast and scam providers - robbin *******s :)

Is there no way to move the CU. After you've spent a few hours crammed in the cupboard trying to change the unit, you'll soon wish you'd picked another job. - I was called out to a blown fuse on a rewirable before Christmas to be shown the CU in the far back corner of a kitchen cupboard. Old 1000mm unit. Once I'd climbed in fully the customer could nearly close the door on me! Whilst there they asked me to price for updating it, until I politely pointed out I wouldn't until they agreed to have the unit moved elsewhere.

Yep would suggest moving it, but from memory there's little scope, as the meter is on other side of wall. But perhaps could move it out of cupboard to somewhere else in the kitchen. However, I don't think the client (especially Mrs) would like to see the CU on display! Some people have no taste.

came across a CU under the kitchen sink the other week. and it was not due to alterations. that's how it was built. thus proving that builders were thick as pig sh*t way back min the 70's as well as now.
