We have a main incoming cable coming into a factory unit where I think the size is 300mm 4c. The cable head says 400. Is this the current carrying capacity of the cable or just the model number of the cable head box? I can't get a definitive answer even from Scottish Power!!!

Thanks. Hutch

Without removing the cutout fuse you'll never know. More to the point why do you want to know?

Hi Tony, at present, the factory runs at 66-70 % capacity and we need additional load on the mains to cope with this, hence the other question I asked last night. I think that we will be close to limits but I need to be sure.

I’d be surprised if the cable is 4 core, far to expensive for the supply companies. 3½ core is usual.

If you’re getting close on loading, it’s going to be expensive to up rate. A .5MVA transformer plus the associated switchgear doesn’t come cheap. Add to that the building work. Highly unlikely they’ll run in a parallel feed.

Scottish Power do a good PDF on their requirements for a supply of that size. You’ll notice their requirements NOT yours. Sorry but it’s not a case of “He who pays the piper calls the tune”, they call the tune and you’ll pay what they say.

Do you know where I can get a copy of the Scottish Power PDF Tony?

Also the factory is right next to the main sub station for the town, (like 25 yards away) so this may be the option for us.
