It's a question I always keep meaning to ask but forget. Then Everytime I come to cutting some capping I remember I have never found a better option other than a junior.

Maybe some tin snips? Metal sheers?

I don't use dipping because plastic stuff is a waste of time and metal stuff is not safe in my opinion as it is not earthed and does not stop screws or nails
tempted to give you a disagree there. capping protects the cables from the platerer's trowel. after that it serves no useful purpose unless providing the possibility of pulling another cable through.

I use an armeg channeling bit and make sure the cables are deep enough
I use the trunking fire clips to hold the cables far enough back to keep them out of the plasterers way
that's fine for chases but what about when the whole wall is being bonding plastered then skimmed. ( not that that happens often, it's all bodge and dab these days).
