We went to look at an electrical job on Saturday and to cut a story short, the work they wanted doing simply wasn't feasible. Anyway, having noticed our van, the guy then proceeds to tell us that solar PV just doesn't work and that he is looking at solar thermal instead as it is much better.

After piping out a few gloriously ill-informed comments on the effectiveness of solar pv systems - including the "systems are being put in which simply do not perform and the tax payer is having to fund them" nonsense - I attempted to correct him. I explained that 16 panel systems do not cost ÂŁ15,000 and they don't take 30 years to pay for themselves. I pointed how quick a system would pay for itself on his roof.

He still stood there arguing the point. As if somehow I had got it all wrong and that his brief scanning through Daily Mail churnalism had left him in a much more informed position than I was.

Exactly how he had arrived at the opinion that solar thermal is a better bet than solar PV is anyone's guess. Probably heard it off a bloke in the pub.

Don't let it bother you. Say your piece and walk away smiling :)
Just tell him you know a great solar thermal company and do one of your contacts a favour by passing the lead on!

Tell him that in Germany the wholesale electricity price goes negative on sunny days. That doesn't happen by having roofs covered in blue glass.
