We've had some contractors digging out for us and they've skinned the outer pva revealing the swa. Of course they had a 'no fault' clause. What can I use to repair the 150mm damage. Joint, tape or ??

I understand that its a buried SWA,

you will need:

An experienced cable jointer and a cable jointing kit.

I think you can get special tape in the wholesalers (CEF), it provides acceptable mechanical protection and does not allow water ingress.
If its just the outer sheath then I would go for this option.

now if i could only remember the name of the stuff, I seen it everyday aswell.....hmm

Would depend how damaged the cable is really, just because it may look like the internal cores are not expossed does not mean they are not damaged. sorry did not look at your profile so don't know your full electrical knowledge but first instance should be to get a sparks to assess and possibly test for the cost of a call out it would be worthwhile. If the cores are still intact and the outer steel sheathing has not been cut and only damage is the pvc outer covering then i would have thought a vasoline or gel covering can be made to stop it rusting but for the intrim try to cover the area with something to keep the water out until it has been inspected as dependant on its protection water ingress may give rise to a possible shock if touched so please don't directly touch it yourself. For more severe damage then other options can be made like a resin kit. hope this helps.

In the past I've used self amalgamating tape, that is providing there is no damage to the cores and the wire armouring.
This stuff works for years and ensures the 'joint' is totally waterproof and if you apply a couple of layers, good mechanical protection.

This can be done as said but caution should be made to sealing water in if it has already got wet as it may rust in time and leave what it is feeding with possibly no earth so moisture and air must be driven out to stop any future corrosion .

I would carefully dry the damaged area with heat gun, on it's lowest heat setting, to drive-off any moisture. Then wrap the cable with 3M Scotch 23, All Voltage Splicing Tape or similar self amalgamating tape, work from a least 3" before the damaged area to 3" past the damaged area to ensure you have a good overlap.

Several ways to repair the sheath of a SWA cable, from integral glued heat shrink wraparound sleeving to a good quality amalgamating tape.

As previously stated, if know to be wet or damp, first drive any moisture out for at least a foot on each side of the damage on the low setting of a heat gun before making the repairs to the sheath....
