Hi All
I need to run an ethernet cable from the 1st floor to the basement. The most direct and easiest route is through the existing trunking which has power cables in it. Is it ok to run the cat5e cable in the trunking if the cable is shielded? I assumed it would be, but some of the things I've read on the internet say it wont completely block interference from the power cables. The run is about 15M.

this is the Foil Twisted Pair (FTP) cable I was looking at.

Cat 5e Network Cable FTP Solid : Network Cables : Maplin

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The cat5e must also be insulated to 240v. And you certainly would still get some interference, especially if some of the cables are switch lines

If you can't satisfy the 240v insylation, then buy 5 lengths of mt0 or smaller trunking and run that inside the other trunking, then its just interference to tackle.

I've never had any problems with doing this even with unscreened cable.

I can also say this should not cause you any problems, if that is the only available run.

A factory I went to recently has data running along side 5 core SWA carrying 125A, and several ring final circuits along tray for 75metres, and they are using Unshielded Twisted Pair!!

You will get it worse with switchlines, not with cables carrying all three phases or phase/neutral, as when all phases are together ion a cable it cancels most of the interference, same goes for ring mains as they carry live and neutral together.

Thanks for the advice fellas
I think i'll go for the mini-trunking inside the bigger trunking to give it that 240v insulation and then go for the screened cable as I'm pretty sure there are switch-lines in the trunking.
The job is in a pub, The data is just normal broadband internet coming off of the router: around 1.5 mbps (Not sure if that's classed as low data traffic). What is the worst that switch-lines could do to the signal?
