I've been asked to run cables for a small network while the property is undergoing refurbishment.
Would cat5 cable suffice for both telephones and broadband extensions?

Not sure what you mean by broadband extensions...if you mean ethernet network (broadband connects to modem/router then run ethernet around the house) then yes it will do both phone and ethernet.

Ultimately depends on what they want to route around the house I guess (for example routing digital video takes a lot of bandwidth) so might be worth looking at cat 6/6e cabling (it's backward compatible). You'll also need to consider the speed of any router and switch/hub speeds (hubs are uncommon these days).

safest bet is usually 'home runs ' of regular cat5e- separate cable for each phone and network point

cat6 needs more care on the install afaik

Thanks for that guys, I would run seperate for telecoms and one each for ethernet back to 4 port router.
Another q..sorry, can rg59 cctv coax be used for tv, digital ...I only ask because I have reams of cat 5 and rg59 left over from previous jobs. Before on network stuff, I was only asked to run cat 5 from a to b...terminating was not my problem, others sorted that, the IT guys.
So I was not sure what did what, all i had was a cable schedule

Caveat being not to be used between a sat dish and receiver (too high frequency even after the LNB). But for the sake of a few quid I'd vote for RG6, the older RG59 is a bit smaller and you may have "fun" terminating it properly
