no, its rj11 plug for phones and rj45 for data(cat5 or cat6). rj11 is smaller. you may reuse existing wiring but got to swap the module and reconnect the other end into phone line.
 
Yes you can you simple buy the adopters to convert, ready available and used in office environments. I have then here at home.

Are the adapters expensive and where do they go at the phone position is assume. Just wondering as I've done a few jobs now where I've run 2 cat 5 to each position for phone and data and was thinking if I just use data points at each position then they have the option of 2 data 2 phone or one of each
 
You got it, standard desk will have (mim) 2 x cat5e/cat6 one for data (computer) and the other for IP phone (no converter needed)
but if you use standard BT type phones in a small office/home you simple utilise the data cable and plug converters in the ends. Just google rj45 to BT or pstn and the little leads will show themselves.

An RJ11 plug will plug into an RJ45 socket
