DECC latest pv install stats

DECC have just released the latest statistics showing the number of sub-50kW PV systems installed over the recent weeks since the latest consultation was announced. Here's a summary:

There are now more than 228,000 systems totaling over 750MW of small PV in the UK.

50% of all Uk installs were done in the last 8 weeks up to the 11th Dec

and 30% of all the 10-50kWp systems were down in the last week - I know they take a bit longer to do, even so, it proves that the change in tariff accelerated uptake at all levels.

If it had continued at the previous levels, even allowing for the gradually increasing uptake, it would have taken 5-6 months to get there.. (that's about right for the amount of work that we did in those weeks)

I've no doubt that had DECC not changed the FIT, the number of installs on the 1st April would have been no where near the level we now have. Many of those who had solar installed during the six week dash would have been those who were not quite sure about solar- it is a large outlay which would take 8-10 years before you have recovered the initial costs, and cannot be transfered should you decide or need to move house. The much shallower reduction in FIT on 1 April meant that although it was preferable to install solar before April, there was not a significant sense of urgency as missing that deadline might add a year or so to the time to recover the initial cost. Combined with the fact that the deadline would have largely gone unnoticed in the press, many sitting on the fence would still be sitting on the fence post 1 April.

However the dramatic cut in FIT, apparently doubling the payback time increased the urgency to a "now or never" situation (which is how it felt immediately after the announcement), meanwhile the controversial change of deadline ahead of the consultation made a lot more people aware of the deadline. Those on the fence decided which way to go - many going for solar on a snap decision.

Sorry, I meant you can't take the panels with you, i.e you will only be certain of getting the full return if you are 100% sure you will not be moving in 25 years!

The FIT can be transferred to the new owners if you sell your house - also I think it is theoretically possible not to transfer the FIT and keep receiving it, but that would require some careful negotiation with the new house owners!

the evidence though from Germany is that the increase in value of your property more than covers the cost of install, especially if the fit is transferred at 43.3p those houses would have a premium on them. not sure if it transfers at the full rate though.

fraid not, it was something I heard a long time ago. Although logic (a dangerous thing!) would suggest a house with a built in income generator would have a slight price premium over one without. I would imagine it could be sold outside the main price by seperate negotiation, as with carpets, curtains etc to avoid the stamp duty

It's a great pity that the data doesn't separate out the rent-a-roofers from normal domestic.
